Tips
How Often Should You Service Your Espresso Machine?
If you run a café or own a professional espresso machine at home, regular servicing isn’t just about keeping your coffee tasting great, it is also essential for safety, efficiency, and prolonging the life of your equipment.
At Steam and Grind, we work with cafés, restaurants, and home baristas across South Wales, Bristol, Bath, and the West to ensure their coffee machines stay in top condition all year round.
Here is what you need to know about servicing schedules, boiler inspections (PSSR 2000), and seasonal considerations for your coffee equipment.
Recommended Espresso Machine Service Intervals (UK Guide)
Commercial Espresso Machines (Cafés & Coffee Shops)
-
Full Service: Every 6-12 months depending on daily usage.
-
Interim Maintenance: Descale (if required), valve checks, pressure calibration every 6-12 months if usage is high.
-
Why? Consistent coffee quality, reduced risk of breakdowns, extends machine life.
High-End Home Espresso Machines (La Marzocco, Rocket, ECM, etc.)
-
Full Service: Every 12-18 months depending on water quality and usage.
-
Routine Cleaning: Back flush weekly, descale every 6 -18 months unless using filtered water.
PSSR 2000 Boiler Inspections: Legal Requirements in the UK
If your espresso machine has a pressure vessel (boiler) operating above 0.5 bar, which most commercial espresso machines operate between 1 – 15 bar , UK law requires a Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR 2000) inspection.
This includes:
-
Written Scheme of Examination (WSE)
-
Inspection and Certification
Recommended every 12-14 months for insurance compliance.
At Steam and Grind, we’re qualified to carry out PSSR 2000 inspections and issue certificates for commercial premises.
Seasonal Considerations for Servicing
-
Pre-Summer: Prepare for warmer months when humidity can affect performance.
-
Pre-Winter: Ensure your machine is cleaned/descaled and seals are checked. Harder water in winter months increases limescale risk.
-
Busy Periods: Before Christmas, summer holidays, or tourist seasons, schedule servicing early to avoid unexpected breakdowns.
Why Regular Servicing Matters
1. Prevents costly breakdowns
2. Keeps coffee tasting consistent
3. Maintains correct boiler pressure and safety
4. Reduces long-term repair costs
5. Helps meet UK insurance and health & safety standards
